What started as a planned 4/20-inspired shoot with Ashleigh evolved into something deeper and more meaningful after delays, weather changes, and a five-month wait. But sometimes, the best results come from the unexpected.

The new vision for this shoot focused on Ashleigh’s connection to nature, and the fluidity of life. We decided to let go of the original plan and embrace the moment, capturing her in an intimate setting where she felt most herself — a serene stream, enjoying the tranquility and solitude of the woods behind my friend’s home in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The shoot perfectly embodied the spirit of relaxation and self-reflection, as she enjoyed a blunt, feeling in tune with both herself and the environment.

The Setting: Reynoldsburg, Ohio's Hidden Beauty

I’ve shot in these woods countless times. It’s a go-to location for me as a portrait photographer here in Columbus, Ohio. The trees, the natural lighting, the stillness — it all comes together beautifully, offering different looks each time I visit. This time, though, nature had other plans. After a storm knocked down several large trees, our usual path was obstructed. My assistant and I had to carry a chair through bug-infested woods while navigating the fallen branches. It was a challenge, but a story worth telling — after all, creativity often comes from overcoming obstacles!

Ashleigh’s Involvement: Styling and Self-Expression

One of the reasons this shoot stood out was Ashleigh’s complete involvement in the creative process. She didn’t just show up; she fully immersed herself in making my vision come to life. From the wardrobe to the makeup and accessories, everything was her idea. I loved that she was adamant about executing this vision with her own touch. Her authenticity came through in every shot, and her idea to smoke a blunt during the shoot added a layer of personal expression that made the experience feel true to her essence.

Photography Gear & Techniques: Bringing the Vision to Life

For this shoot, I used my Sony A7IV with Sigma 85 Art 1.4, Sony G-Master 24-70 2.8, and Sigma Art 35 1.4 lenses. To add a surreal, artistic flair, I incorporated Prism FX’s kaleidoscope filter. We relied on natural light to enhance the serene, nature-focused theme. The lighting was perfect, reflecting the warmth and comfort that Ashleigh radiated throughout the shoot.

As a portrait photographer, my goal is always to make my subjects feel comfortable — not just in front of the camera, but within themselves. Ashleigh found her flow quickly, using her body, the chair, and the natural surroundings to explore different emotions and movements.
