Exploring the Dark Side

Michael Myers Cosplay Photoshoot in Columbus, Ohio

When Mikey Mike Cosplay reached out about doing a photoshoot for his various Michael Myers-inspired cosplays, I knew we had to push the boundaries and create something truly unique. Known for blending iconic slasher elements with his own pop culture influences, MMC's vision was to showcase The Shape in a new light—reflective, contemplative, and artistic, while still maintaining the character’s dark and murderous essence.

The Setting:

Church of the Sparkling Unicorn

We chose to shoot at the Church of the Sparkling Unicorn, known affectionately as the "Home to Trauma and Drauma." The location, once a Methodist church, still holds onto many of its original elements, including stained glass windows, a grand piano, and Gothic architecture. It provided the perfect eerie backdrop for our session, blending horror with a touch of unexpected serenity.

What made this shoot so impactful was MMC’s intentional approach to his cosplays. Each mask, each outfit—everything was selected to complement the setting. His thoughtfulness about how his vision could intersect with mine allowed us to create images that not only stayed true to the iconic slasher but also felt like a genuine reimagining of Michael Myers.

One of the most memorable parts of the session wasn’t during the shoot itself but at the end. Knowing how much my son loves Michael Myers and horror icons, MMC surprised me with a custom Michael Myers mask for my son. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture, and my son absolutely loved it.

Technical Aspects of the Shoot

To bring our vision to life, I shot with my Sony A7IV using a mix of lenses: the Sigma 85 Art 1.4, Sony GMaster 24-70 2.8, and Sigma Art 35 1.4. I also incorporated Prism FX’s kaleidoscope filter for added visual interest and used Neewer RGB panel lighting to play with colors and tones. This setup allowed us to highlight both the intensity and humanity in The Shape, making each shot feel like a piece of art.

Capturing the Humanity of a Monster

My approach was to explore the humanity within The Shape. We shot in areas where MMC could interact with the traditional elements of the church—like the stained glass and the piano—to create a juxtaposition of innocence and menace. The end result was a series of hauntingly beautiful images that captured a side of Michael Myers rarely seen before.
